How We Can Help

Are you a textile organisation looking to develop a strategic approach to sustainability that builds reputation, attracts talent, reduces risk, and makes progress?

Or is your organisation looking to develop a strategic approach to textile procurement to reduce waste, brand risk, carbon emissions and costs?

We are here to help!

There are so many sustainability hotspots in the textile industry, carbon emissions, modern slavery, animal welfare, and waste – and they often occur in different parts of the value chain. The Formary helps you identify what to focus on, enabling real progress.

The Issues

Clothing production has reached 100 billion units annually, with only about 1% of material used to produce clothing recycled, representing a loss of more than USD $100 billion worth of materials each year. To stay within the ecological boundaries of the planet there must be a radical reduction in the draw on virgin resources, a reduction in carbon generated by the clothing industry, an elimination of waste and the extraction of considerably higher value from clothing.

Carbon Emmissons

The clothing industry has an annual carbon footprint of 3.3 billion tonnes CO2e nearly that of the whole European Union (3.5 billion tonnes).

Waste

Over 100 billion garments are produced worldwide each year with only a fraction ever recycled. Most ends up in landfill releasing green-house gases as they decompose.

Animal Welfare

Animal skins for the fashion industry are often sourced from countries with no animal welfare legislation and protection laws.

Modern Slavery

Fashion is one of the most labour-intensive industries, and one of five key industries implicated in modern slavery by advocacy organizations.

“We’re very fortunate and delighted to work with The Formary to help produce this wonderful sustainable product.  The unique production process, which overcomes many previous technical barriers, enables us to reuse our coffee sacks and reintroduce them into our stores in a way that further enhances their interiors for our customers.”
